Women and Girls in Sport Week in Dumfries and Galloway

This is Women and Girls in Sport Week and Dumfries and Galloway Council Leader Elaine Murray, Provost Tracey Little and Councillor Ros Surtees, chair of the Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning committee, were keen to show their support.

Council Leader Elaine Murray said: “Participating in sport not only increases fitness for girls, it is a great way of improving self-esteem and mental wellbeing. Unfortunately, evidence shows that many girls drop out of sport around the age of 14. We must find ways to encourage them to see sport as something for life.”
Provost Tracey Little said: “Initiatives such as this provide a fantastic opportunity for girls and women to try out new sports and, hopefully find one they continue with.”
Councillor Ros Surtees, CYPLL vice chair, said: “Physical Activity is key to developing a healthier, smarter, stronger Scotland. It’s vital that we provide as many opportunities as possible for girls and women to participate.”
