Be Safe and Be Seen this Winter

NHS Dumfries and Galloway and Sustrans are urging drivers to keep an eye out for vulnerable road users and to watch their speed now that the clocks have gone back.

Cyclists and pedestrians are also being advised to “be seen and be safe” now that British Summer Time is over. People will be travelling during darkness for longer periods and the Health Board is advising that cyclists wear brightly-coloured or fluorescent clothing in daylight and reflective clothing or accessories in the dark. Pedestrians, including joggers, are being reminded that it is hard for motorists to see them if they are wearing dark clothing.

Rhian Davies, Active Travel Officer for Sustrans said:

“By law, cycles must have front and rear lights switched on in the dark and be fitted with reflectors but it is also very important that other users help by looking out for cyclists and pedestrians. I’ll be giving out free reflectors, lights and goodies to NHS and council staff to help them be seen and be safe.”

Dr Nigel Calvert, Consultant in Public Health Medicine for NHS Dumfries and Galloway added:

“At this time of year we need to start getting ready for the winter ahead. As we have said, part of this is about eligible people getting a flu and pneumonia vaccine. Road safety, now that the longer nights are here, is also really important. I’d ask people who cycle to make sure that they have good lights and brightly coloured clothing and for drivers to keep a particular look out for vulnerable road users”.
