Visitors descend on Dumfries Ice Bowl as the UK’s biggest international synchronized skating competition opens in style.
Today sees the official opening of the fourth annual Trophy D’Ecosse, the ISU & Club International Synchronized Skating Competition, at Dumfries Ice Bowl.
Celebrations for the competition swept through Dumfries town centre yesterday afternoon as a flashmob took over the fountain with a stomping Scottish welcome for the competition’s international guests.
The pop-up celebration marked the beginning of a procession of skating teams from the town centre to DGOne to attend the competition draw. The performance- put together by Dumfries skating teams the Solway Stars, Solway Eclipse and Solway Lightning, had bystanders bouncing as Dumfries celebrated the arrival of skating teams from across the UK and Europe for this year’s competition.
The sound of The Proclaimers 500 Miles filled the streets on Thursday and echoed on the ice today as the opening ceremony filled Dumfries Ice Bowl with energy, style and fun to kick off the competition. From today until Sunday the international flags fly outside the Ice Bowl as skating teams compete across a range of categories over three days.
Around 2,000 people are expected in Dumfries over the weekend as participants and spectators as the event is estimated to bring in over £500,000 for the local economy. The venue opens its doors to welcome spectators free of charge throughout the weekend for fantastic entertainment at any age.
Audiences are encouraged to show their support for the local Solway Skating teams who last year scooped gold and silver medals at Trophy D’Ecosse and hope to replicate their success in 2014. Live scores will be posted to the event’s twitter and facebook pages for audiences to keep up with progress and the competition results
