NHS Dumfries and Galloway are urging people to keep well and stay safe this winter and highlighting especially the Christmas and New Year holiday time.
Peter Armstrong, Emergency Department Consultant said:
“Our message is keep as well and as safe as you can this winter. Enjoy the festivities over Christmas and New Year but stay safe, and if you are drinking alcohol, it’s important to remember your tolerance for alcohol may not be the same as others you’re drinking with. Try not to exceed your limits. Have a plan to get home if you are out and about.
“During the recent spell of freezing temperatures we experienced an influx in attendances and admissions at the Emergency Department due to slips and falls, many resulting in broken bones. Take care, be cautious walking or driving in icy or wet weather. Wear appropriate footwear and wrap up warm and if weather is extreme only make essential journeys.
“We want everyone to stay safe so they can enjoy Christmas and New Year holidays and keep well in the winter period.”
During the Christmas and New Year holiday time there are options to access health care or health care advice. Out of GP practice hours you can call 111 to speak to NHS staff who will advise you on the most appropriate action. You may be directed to self-care, a pharmacy, the GP Out of Hours service, Out of Hours dentist, or to attend the Emergency Department.
When GP, dental practices and pharmacies are closed call 111, or in the event of an emergency or broken bones you should come to the Emergency Department or dial 999.
