The Year of Young People 2018 launches in Dumfries and Galloway on Friday 12 January at Galabank in Annan.
The year aims to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrating their achievements, valuing their contribution to communities, and creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally. The Council aims to provide an aspirational programme of events, experiences and activities for the region’s young people.
The launch event will begin with a lantern procession, making its way from Annan Academy to Galabank football stadium. More than 350 young people from schools and community groups across Annandale and Eskdale will walk in the lantern procession. The lanterns have all been made at workshops held in schools and community groups during November and December.
Then everyone is welcome to attend a free event at Galabank, following the lantern procession. The event will include musical performances from Annan and Lockerbie Academy, ending with a 10 minute firework display. Food and refreshments will be provided by Annan Athletic FC in the football ground. The event is funded by Awards for All and Magnox.
Councillor Adam Wilson, Young People’s Champion for Dumfries and Galloway Council, said: “This launch will be the first event in our council’s ambitious plan for the Year of Young People. The plan is the result of months of hard work with a huge input from local young people and shows their talents and that our Council is committed to providing activities for our young people.”
Hannah Birse, treasurer of the Year of Young People steering group, said:“It’s really exciting to have our launch event to kick start what will be an exciting year for young people. I’ve enjoyed being part of this group that has planned the event and hope everyone can come along and enjoy the procession and the event.”
