Councillors All A-Board for Kirkcudbright Skate Park

Support for a new skate park in Kirkcudbright will be ‘ramping up’ if the land ear-marked is given the green light by the Policy and Resources committee [18 January]. The committee will be asked to give its seal of approval for the new skate park to be located in Gartshore Park.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has demonstrated its commitment to work with communities in respect to running facilities and providing services across the region with a particular focus on meeting the needs of local communities.

Kirkcudbright Skate Park Group has been working towards a skate park being created in Kirkcudbright for the past couple of years. The group are looking to establish a new state of the art skate park within an area of Gartshore Park within the town. The report being provided to Councillors next week will ask them to agree to lease an area within Gartshore Park for a period of 25 years.

Kirkcudbright Skate Park aims to provide children and young people with a dedicated, safe, sociable and enjoyable outdoor facility where they can play and exercise in the town of Kirkcudbright. The project encourages an active, outdoor lifestyle in a rural community and aims to provide a facility for the many skaters, bikers, scooters and boarders who already exist and currently use the streets of the centre of town.

Chair of Policy and Resources committee, Rob Davidson, said “This is a great example of community empowerment coming to real life. This group identified that the skate park is something that the town needs and their hard work has resulted in a really good business case being produced which clearly demonstrates the benefits that the skate park will bring to the town. Leasing the group the land within the park will bring them one step closer to their vision being realised. I hope that Councillors will give it their full backing.”
Vice Chair of Policy and Resources, Elaine Murray, said “Empowering our communities to make the most of their assets is a commitment of our Council. Having an asset in the middle of our town that encourages individuals and families to be active whilst enjoying the outdoors is something that I’m confident councillors will get behind. I hope this great example of the community working together to deliver this skate park inspires and encourages more groups in our communities to come together to deliver assets that they can be proud of.”
