A 19-year-old Engineering apprentice who studies at the Barony Campus of Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Lantra Learner of the Year Awards.
Cameron Howie from Mauchline was nominated in the category for Land-based Engineering by his course tutor. Cameron works for John H McNae Ltd in Tarbolton, and is progressing through his apprenticeship.
Lantra Scotland is the sector skills council for land-based, aquaculture and environmental conservation industries, and the awards play a vital role in promoting careers within the rural sector, celebrating the achievements of learners and highlighting the importance to employers of investing in skills.
Cameron had experience as a driver operator and was initially planning a career as a driver mechanic but soon realised that he really wanted to focus as an engineer and started looking for a job with engineering apprenticeship prospects. Cameron completed the National Certificate in Land-based Engineering at Barony, gaining the top engineering student at the annual college prize-giving ceremony, and then continued on to his apprenticeship.
The apprentices and trainees who have made the shortlist will find out if they have won at a gala dinner and award ceremony on Thursday 1 March at the Doubletree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro.
Barony Campus has a range of Engineering courses on offer, from the access Introduction course, through to National Certificate and Extended Diploma, as well as work-based opportunities.
