Mindfulness Course Focuses on Chronic Pain

A CHANCE to learn techniques aimed at managing long-term pain is being offered in Dumfries.

Following on from the success of a separate, fully booked course in the town, another free Mindfulness Course is being offered –providing an interactive approach helping to change the way we think and feel about experiences in our lives

Helping lead the course is Prescribing Support Pharmacist Dr Emily Kennedy, who said: “This mindfulness course has a special focus on chronic pain.
“The course offers approaches aimed at helping people manage this pain, and get the most out of their lives.
“Part of mindfulness is meditating, to really help people to understand their own thought patterns and feelings – becoming more aware of them but not occupied by them, and better able to manage them.”

The majority of people who take part in the mindfulness course report lasting physical and psychological benefits.

This latest course begins this Thursday March 8 at Georgetown Community Centre running over the next eight Thursday afternoons.

Dr Emily Kennedy will be leading the course together with Nithsdale Public Health Practitioner Tina Gibson.

The course is free, but uses the book ‘Mindfulness for health’ by Vidmayala Burch and Danny Penman for which there is a small charge. And participants are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
