Accreditation Status Awarded to Four Local Sports Clubs

Four clubs have achieved Dumfries and Galloway Council’s accreditation status: Dumfries Cycling Club, Dumfries Y Gymnastics, Thornhill Golf Club, and Dumfries Table Tennis Club.

The scheme supports clubs to improve the quality of opportunities and is an effective way for clubs to demonstrate to parents, schools and the wider community that they have achieved nationally recognised minimum criteria in governance, child protection, welfare, equity, first aid, and operate a safe environment to play sport.

The clubs will be working with the Council’s Active Schools and Community Sport team as part of the holiday and term time programmes.

Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of the Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning [CYPLL] committee, said: “Providing the best start for all our children is a priority for our Council and I’m delighted to see that local clubs are keen to provide safe environments for our young people.”
Councillor Ros Surtees, vice chair, said: “Sporting opportunities enable children and young people to be successful learners, confident people, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society. Accredited clubs promote governing body recognised standards.”
The sports club accreditation scheme aims to make clubs safer and stronger with recognised standards of welfare, equality, coaching and management. An accredited club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages, as well as helping parents and carers know that they’re choosing the right club for their young people.”
