Young Dumfries Stars Finish League Campaign

Dumfries Thirteens 123 for 5 v Lanercost 110 for 8

The Under 13s survived a sometimes ragged display to win against Lanercost at The Priory. Orla Montgomery got them off to a blistering start with the bat and Aiden Goodin, with a calm bowling, spell saw them home.

To be fair to the youngsters there was a fair sprinkling of inexperience on the field.  Batting first Dumfries were 42 in the fourth over when Montgomery retired but a combination of wickets at the wrong time and some over-hitting resulted in a disappointing total. However Fergus Bainbridge can count himself unlucky when out caught on the boundary to a well struck hook shot and Vaughn Staples gave a hint of the batter lurking within.

Lanercost batters did not quite manage the same opening burst but when their top batter retired more than half the runs had been made and half of the overs were left. After 15 overs only 25 runs were needed with 6 wickets in hand. Defeat was looming but a change of pace was the turning point – the introduction of Goodin altered the course of the game completely and the skipper cleverly recognised it to give Vaughn Staples his maiden bowling spell of the season. The two of them bowled their combined 6 overs for a mere 12 runs and took 4 wickets.

Dumfries now have a nervous wait to see if they will be crowned champions in their first ever competitive season.  It has been an excellent campaign by the youngsters and the experience of playing week in and week out against the same age opposition has been a massive benefit to their development.  Anybody interested in playing cricket with Dumfries Cricket Club should contact the club at Dumfriescricketclub.com

Scottish Champions come unstuck at Dumfries

Prestiwck 142 all out v Croma Vigilant Dumfries 144 for 4

Croma Vigilant Dumfries have put together two victories in a row and defeated the 2017 National Champions to move out of the relegation zone.

Dumfries won the toss and elected to field on a green wicket and opening bowling spell saw two early wickets from Smit, the first a snick to Beveridge and the second clean bowled.  A partnership began to take place for Prestwick as they rebuilt, but the introduction of spin from Scott Beveridge put Dumfries back on top picking up 4 wickets to destroy the middle order and put Dumfries firmly on top.  Gooding dismissed Rao before pace was reintroduced and Niall Alexander and Christopher McCutcheon dismissed the tail despite a handy 15 from the number 11 batsman.  Prestwick were all out for 142.

Dumfries reply got off to a nightmare start as Prestwick opened with their spin options and 4 of Dumfries batsmen fell for minimal runs.  Chris Bellwood was however in inspired form and was on top of the Prestwick bowlers.  Scott Beveridge was the able support to Bellwood as he passed his fifty.  Prestwick were struggling to make the breakthrough and began using other bowlers in an attempt to get the wicket they needed.  Bellwood and Beveridge thrived on this knowling they were firmly on top.  Dumfries passed the total with 6 overs to spare with Chris Bellwood finishing on 86 not out.

Happy Huxtable Hundred

Nunholm 268 for 7 v Anniesland 92 all out

Nunholm travelled to Anniesland and walked away with victory, albeit after a nervous start.

Nunholm won the toss and elected to bat, and after the early overs it looked like a mistake had been made as early wickets fell.  Nunholm found themselves 35-4 with a mixture of batsman errors and a tricky wicket.  Patrick Corkery and Gurapul Singh steadied the innings with some perseverance and shot making, and when Corkery was adjudge caught behind Nunholm were still in a difficult spot at 76-5. Robbie Huxtable joined Singh at the crease and they both battled through to establish themselves at the crease.  Both batsmen were beginning to put away the bad ball and the score was beginning to tick along to put Nunholm back in control.  Both batsmen celebrated fifties around the same time and were beginning to think of big scores.  Singh identified that Huxtable was the dominate batsman and was rotating the strike for Huxtable.  Singh tried one quick single too many and was run out for 78.  Huxtable worked with the tail and eventually in the last over of the match need 9 for his maiden century, he attacked and celebrated with a couple balls to go.  Nunholm finished on 268 for 7.

In reply Anniesland got off to a bad start as Callum Reynolds-Lewis struck in the first over with a caught and bowled.  Nunholm were patient in the field and bowling changes were helpful for making breakthroughs.  It was when Trevor Newport came on to change the pace that the Anniesland began to falter.  They attempted to attack the spin bowling and were found wanting as Newport collect 5 wickets in his 10 overs.  Reynolds Lewis returned to eventually clean up the tail.  Anniesland were all out for 92.
