Last week (Thursday 6 September) saw Dumfries and Galloway walk away with the top awards in a national award ceremony.
The Keep Scotland Beautiful Awards in Haddington saw a number of Dumfries and Galloway projects win prestigious titles. The award ceremony rewards the work undertaken in communities throughout Scotland to help deliver clean and beautiful towns and villages and improvement initiatives that make an impact.
Dumfries and Galloway Council won the prestigious Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Award. This award is presented to the local authority that demonstrates the highest standard of horticulture in public open spaces. This is in recognition that the huge effort that the Council’s gardening teams put in to making towns and villages across the region look their best through gardening maintenance and floral displays.
The Large Town Trophy was won by The People’s Project in Dumfries. This is the highest recognition for the hard work by The People’s Project.
There was also success for small town projects. Silver Gilt awards were won by two local projects – Brighten Up Kirkconnel and to the New Luce Gardening Group. The groups in both of these towns have made a huge effort to make their villages look beautiful.
Chair of the Council’s Communities committee, Andy Ferguson, who attended the awards ceremony, said “The outstanding achievements of volunteer groups, businesses and the Council across the region have been recognised for the outstanding contribution that they make to our towns and villages. I am proud of our Council winning the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Award. This is down to the hard work and dedication that the teams put in to making our towns and villages look their very best. I’d like to congratulate all the winners on their fantastic achievements.”
