The popular BBC Documentary “Grand Tours of Scotland’s Lochs” which goes on air on Monday 8th October on BBC One Scotland, 7.30-8.00pm features Dumfries and Galloway.
On this Grand Tour entitled Hidden Lochs of Galloway presenter Paul Murton discovers the strategic wartime importance of Loch Ryan.
Then in Stranraer, Paul discovers a legacy of Arctic exploration and an old can of bully beef. He also meets a clan chief John MacArthur, of that ilk, who tends a unique garden at Castle Kennedy surrounded by two lochs. Reliving the days of steam trains, Paul walks the old railway line towards Loch Ken. On the banks of Loch Trool, he discovers some rocky evidence of Bruce’s victory over the English in 1307, and then climbs the highest mountain south of Ben Lomond: the mighty Merrick.
With the episode touching on stories from the times of Robert the Bruce through to World War II, Paul Murton says in his introduction: “Remote and often overlooked, these lochs have a surprising role in Scottish history.”
