Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove a car roof and rescue an injured man who was trapped following a collision in Dumfries and Galloway on Wednesday afternoon (21 May).
The two vehicle crash took place around 4:50pm on Annan Road in Gretna and saw a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crew mobilised in response to a request for assistance from the Scottish Ambulance Service.
A single appliance was sent from Gretna Community Fire Station and reached the scene of the crash within seven minutes.
Watch Manager Phil Birkett, the incident commander, said: “We initially responded to make the vehicles safe but our role quickly developed as paramedics determined more space was needed to move the casualty.
“Our crew then put their road rescue skills into effect to cut the roof from the car and allow the man to be safely extricated.
“All three emergency services were working closely – while firefighters were rescuing the casualty he was receiving treatment from paramedics as police officers marshalled traffic to ensure the safety of the scene.
“There is a very close working relationship between the emergency services in this area and that was clear to see throughout this operation.”
After being safely released from the car the man was moved to a waiting ambulance and taken to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. A second man was also taken to the same hospital for a precautionary check-up.
