Council reaffirms commitment to armed forces
Dumfries and Galloway Council has reaffirmed its support for our armed forces by re-signing its Armed Forces Covenant.
The Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between the local community and its armed forces; based on 2 key principles:
1. the armed forces community shouldn’t be disadvantaged compared to other citizens when accessing public and commercial services; and that
2. special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most, such as those injured or bereaved.
Signatories to the Armed Forces Covenant were:
Colonel Sandy Fitzpatrick
Councillor Elaine Murray, Leader, Dumfries and Galloway Council
Councillor Rob Davidson, Depute Leader, Dumfries and Galloway Council
Councillor Archie Dryburgh, Armed Forces Champion, Dumfries and Galloway Council
Representing the Armed Forces at the signing ceremony, Colonel Sandy Fitzpatrick said, “The re-signing of this Armed Forces Covenant clearly indicates Dumfries and Galloway Council’s ongoing commitment to support its local armed forces community. It’s excellent news for current and former armed forces personnel. The armed forces have always enjoyed a close working relationship with our local community and this is evidence of its enduring support.”
Council Leader Elaine Murray said: “In an increasingly complex and challenging world, we rely on our armed forces to protect us against a wide range of threats. Local men and women are at the heart of this. Our Armed Forces Covenant endorses our good relationship with the armed forces and clearly demonstrates our support for current and former service personnel.”
Depute Leader Rob Davidson said: “Many local men and women serve in the armed forces, carrying out difficult and often dangerous tasks on our behalf and we’re very grateful for the work that they do. Our Community Covenant is one way that we can say thank you.”
Councillor Archie Dryburgh, Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said, “Our Council works with as many organisations as possible to improve the lives of ex-service personnel in Dumfries and Galloway. I’m delighted that our Council has reaffirmed its commitment to our armed forces community by resigning this Covenant.”
