Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Library Service is taking part in the annual national World Book Night on Tuesday 23 April. Books are being given away free of charge to help encourage people to read who may not normally read books.
The Reading Agency is a national charity which aims to help and support people through the power of reading which is proven to help mental health and wellbeing. The books being given away contain resources for helping with local and family history and have images of people and places in our region. The community focus of these books highlights one of the Council’s commitments in supporting our local people. The photographs show a by-gone age but will hopefully spark some memories and stories of events and traditions. These paperbacks detail the wonderful culture and heritage of Dumfries and Galloway through its communities and demonstrate what a fascinating region we live in.
The give-away will take place throughout the region in every library, although the date may change due to normal opening hours so please check the local facility for opening times for the event. Opening times can be found at www.dumgal.gov.uk/lia
Chairman of the Communities Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson spoke ahead of the Book Night event. He said;
“World Book Night is something that’s celebrated across the nation. I am delighted to see that we’re marking the event in such a community-focussed way. It’s not just about the 23rd itself, there will be activities happening in libraries across the region in the days leading up to World Book Night too.”
Vice-Chair of the Communities Committee, Councillor John Martin commented;
“Having had a read through these free books, I would encourage everyone to get along to your local library and have a look. Our libraries are not just somewhere to pick up a book though. We have customer services, internet access and staff on hand to advise and assist you. We want our libraries to be a cornerstone of our communities from Langholm to Wigtown. If you do one thing next week, make it a trip to your local library.”
Information on World Book Day events will be available on the Council website and via Facebook – search for ‘Dumfries and Galloway Libraries’ for the latest information.
