Dumfries Cricket Club Weekend Round Up on DGWGO

The weather played a key factor in determining the results on Saturday with both the Croma Vigilant Dumfries and Nunholm having their matches eventually called off due to persistent rain.

Croma Vigilant Dumfries 87 for 2 after 19.1 overs v St Michaels – Match Abandoned

Croma Vigilant Dumfries lost the toss and were put into bat by St Michaels and they started well with 50 runs on the board before St Michaels made a breakthrough dismissing Adam Malik.  Runs continued to flow with Thomas Mc Bride scoring at a run a ball, supported by the steady Andrew Dawson.  McBride fell in the 18th over and no sooner had Scott Beveridge joined Dawson at the crease then the rain appeared.  Tea was taken early, and the calculators were out to get to grips with the Duckworth-Lewis prediction.  Umpires continued to inspect the ground and were St Michaels required to bat they would have been chasing an adjusted total of 150 off 20 overs to win.  It was not to be and the match was called off at 4pm and no further play took place.  Croma Vigilant Dumfries remain unbeaten and will take on Ayr this week at Dumfries Sports Club which could be a crucial fixture in determining the outcome of the division.

Nunholm travelled to Bothwell, but the rain arrived almost as soon as the cars arrived at the ground and, whilst every effort was made to get the fixture played, there was no play and the team returned back to Dumfries and remain in third place in the league.

Thirteens Beaten but not Bowed

Dumfries CC Under13s 94 for 4 v Penrith CC Under 13s 98 for 5

The Dumfries under 13 team travelled to Penrith for their first match of phase 2 of the Premier Section of the Cumbria East League. Their target was to give a good account of themselves against a team which had lost no wickets and had 2 dominant victories

Captain Aiden Goodin made his first good decision on winning the toss – bat first! He was rewarded by a fine knock from debut opener Fergus Cubbon who sailed to his retiral. Aiden himself batted well and the two of them put on 43 for the first wicket. After a bit of a wobble Niamh Muir came in at five and was the other major contributor – 22 runs full of aesthetically pleasing shots. Munro Cubbon can also be pleased with himself being involved in a 26-run partnership. A good all-round batting display against some quality bowling saw the Doonhamers to 94 for 5 – a more than respectable performance.

However Penrith set about the task of overhauling their target like a team used to getting their own way and it could have been over very quickly. However Katy Anderson put an ever-so-slight dent in their confidence with a caught-and-bowled and Max Corbett-Byers did some more damage with possibly the worst ball of a good spell of bowling but the highlight of the evening was Cory Dawson’s first over at this level – his third ball was very nearly his hat-trick ball – the would be catch falling just inches short of cover!

A 4-wicket defeat with overs to spare may not sound good but the youngsters should feel proud of themselves – not least Nairn Cubbon for an impressive performance behind the stumps conceding only the single bye.

Dumfries U13s 94 for 4

Fergus Cubbon 30, Niamh Muir 22,

Good contributions from Aiden Goodin, Munro Cubbon

Penrith 95 for 5

Dumfries Under 11s in Maiden League Win

Dumfries Sunday Dev XI 196 for 5 v Keswick 196 for 8

Dumfries travelled to Keswick and after a long day the honours were even as the game ended in a rare tie.

Rain was in the air as Dumfries began to bat and on a wicket that was slow and kept low it was Adam Malik who dominated the bowling respecting the good balls and dispatching the bad ones to the boundary.  Malik retired on 54 after hitting a 6 square of the wicket.  Mat Williams was a steady influence during the middle overs as Dumfries lost a few wickets to rash shots as batsmen attacked the Keswick bowling.  Williams retired on 51, with Andrew Reed replacing him in the middle, again the experience showed as Reed worked with a few partners to push the total up to 196 with only 5 wickets lost.

Dumfries entered the field with confidence to defend the total, and whilst Keswick got off to a slow start, they were still able to find the boundary square of the wicket to keep their interest.  It was a bowling change of Sean Thornely who made the break through picking up a quick 3 wickets to put Dumfries and the driving seat.  Luke McBurnie and Aiden Goodin did a solid job in the middle overs each picking up a wicket.  Oscar Link entered the fray and look assured from ball one, he began to control the run chase which was near 8 an over, but with smart singles, fielding errors and the occasional boundary the nerves started to appear for Dumfries who were slowly looking like throwing away all the points available.  It came down to the last over with 5 required for Keswick to win.  Sean Thornely was given the task of defending the position.  Oscar link managed to punch the ball through the infield and scrambled 3 meaning he was required to retire for a well earned 50.  A single with 3 balls to go meant the scores were tied.  1 run to win off of 3 balls, Thornely got the new batsman to hit the ball into the waiting hands of Reed and with the final ball of the match he bowled Alfie Davies and the points were shared.  Sean Thornely finished with a 5 wicket haul.

Dumfries 196 for 5

Adam Malik 54 not out, Mat Williams 51 not out

Keswick 196 for 8

Sean Thornely 5 wickets, James Hobman, Aiden Goodin, Luke McBurnie each with 1 wicket
