After many months of hard work and fundraising by a small team of organisers it is hoped that thousands of people will show their support and line King Street in Castle Douglas tomorrow Sunday the 7th of July to watch all the fun and antics of the first ever Castle Douglas Soap Box Derby.
Over 20 gravity karts of all shapes and sizes designed and built by teams from right across the region will be rumbling down a purpose built obstacle course on King Street in Castle Douglas from 12.00pm tomorrow afternoon ( Sunday the 7th of July).
The Organisers and a team of volunteers will shut of King Street from 7.00am on Sunday morning, to set up the course and the safety barriers and the first kart should set off from the start ramp at the Market Hill down the race track at noon.
Matt Mckerlie from Castle Douglas, was one of the orginal team who came up with the idea last August, Matt said “Setting up the course is going to be a big job, we are hoping to start at 7.00am and we are looking for as many volunteers to turn out as possible to help with putting up the safety barriers and the course and taking them back down again after the racing has finished.”
Matt Continued “The team pit lane ( accessed from rear of Market Hill carpark)will open at 9.30am for the karting crews to prepare their racing machines. We have asked that all competitors and stewards attend the race breifing at ‘The Legion’ on the Market Hill at 11.15am.”
Public Parking will be available at Wallets Marts and on The Market Hill, Matt has asked “We want everyone who comes along to watch the event to really enjoy themselves. If the weather is kind it really should be a fantastic family day out. Please if you are parking in the town be considerate and please park without causing any obstructions for others , We really want the people and businesses of Castle Douglas to embrace the Soap Box Derby so that we can hold it again and again.”
Matt Also said “We would like to give a massive thank you to everyone that has supported us so far, we have had so many fantastic donations by local people and businesses and help from several local groups with the planning and organisation, without all that support we would never of got the day of the ground. All we need now is for the people to turn up to watch, and for the teams to hopefully get their karts from the Start line to the Finish line”
“It would be great to see people dressed up for the day to support their favourite teams, waving flags and shouting and cheering along the sides of the track just like you see at the Red Bull Soap Box Derby on telly”
