This weekend is the 16th anniversary of the Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail, a celebration of Kirkcudbright’s rich artistic history and current creative practice. Historic artist’s work such as E.A Hornel, Charles Oppenheimer and Jessie M King can also be seen at Broughton House and in the new Kirkcudbright Galleries.
The Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail encourages artists, crafts workers and the general public alike to visit the beautiful town. You can visit over 100 venues and meet artists in their studios, witnessing their works is well worthwhile and our all-inclusive free trail makes this possible. As well as open studios there are many gardens, halls and pop-ups to visit during the four day event (2nd to 5th Aug).
The local community get fully involved in the event each year and this year’s theme is the lunar landing and space travel; so expect to see lots of creative aliens, monsters and space ship references in between venues.
There will be live music and invisible street theatre interventions devised by the ‘Get Your Arts Here’ project which is a creative skills development and work experience project aimed at young people aged 13-25 designed to help develop their creative industry skills and ambitions. This is being achieved through a series of physical theatre workshops funded by The Holywood Trust and The Dumfries and Galloway Council’s ‘Regional Art Fund’ in partnership with DG Unlimited and enabled by the Kirkcudbright Development Trust. Workshops and work experience are being delivered by local professional artists who specialise in street theatre, traditional music and cultural event production. These workshops will result in fun and entertaining ‘pop-up’ live street theatre performances where young performers will be providing interactive ‘walk-about’ street theatre to entertain everyone.
The young team of creative producers are also getting hands-on learning related to cultural event production through helping to organise, publicise, set up, run and take down the venues that make up the Kirkcudbright Art and Craft Trail. The ‘Get Your Arts Here’ project aims to ensure the continuing success of the annual Art and Craft Trail while also bringing an exciting new element through street theatre entertainment.
The Kirkcudbright Art and Craft Trail is happening across Kirkcudbright from 11am to 5pm from 2nd-5th August.
