About 9.50 pm on Tuesday 24th June 2014, Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, responded to a call from Police Scotland, to search for a walker who had got disorientated whilst descending a cloud covered Cairnsmore of Fleet.
Ten personnel responded from our base at Newton Stewart and commenced a search in poor visibility for the 22 year old local man.
Depute Team Leader Ken McKenzie who led the search said “We used the SARLoc system to get a location fix on the walker and by talking to him on his mobile phone, we guided him to the summit cairn. It was a relatively straightforward exercise to make our way to that location and walk him off the hill”.
“He was a bit cold, but otherwise safe and well. We were off the hill shortly after midnight”.
At the time of the call the cloud level was down to about 500m which resulted in very poor visibility on the hillside. For more information about the voluntary activities of Galloway MRT including details of incidents, training, walk routes and much more, visit www.gallowaymrt.org.uk
