Police Launch Overtaking Safety Campaign

Police Scotland is launching a campaign next week to highlight the importance of returning to the left lane after overtaking.

Police Scotland is running their campaign to reduce the number of drivers who stay in the middle lane of a motorway when it is safe to move back into the left lane.

Rule 264 of the Highway Code reads:

“You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, traffic officers in uniform or by signs.”

To assist with Police Scotland’s campaign, Traffic Scotland will be activating VMS signage to remind drivers to move back into the left lane when possible.
