Fairtrade Fortnight 2021 runs from now until 7 March and South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth, who is chairman of the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Fairtrade Steering Group, as well as convener of the Scottish Parliament’s cross-party group on Fair Trade, is urging local people to make any contribution they can, no matter how small, to make a real difference in keeping Fair Trade shops and suppliers alive in our communities.
While the continuing lockdown situation means that many shops are closed, people can still play their part in choosing to buy Fair Trade products while doing their weekly shop or by purchasing online.
Colin Smyth said: “As global supply chains are disrupted, and markets continue to disappear with the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the commitment to buying Fair Trade has never been more important.
“That is why this Fairtrade Fortnight I am urging everyone to make the switch to Fair Trade if they can.
“I am aware that many individuals and organisations are struggling during this terrible time and choosing Fair Trade might not seem like a priority.
“However, by choosing even a couple of Fair Trade products during the weekly grocery shop, you will be making a big difference to the lives of Fair Trade producers across the world.
“While a lot of our fantastic Fair Trade shops remain closed right now, many suppliers are still selling online and I would urge people to choose to support them where possible.
“The basic principles of Fair Trade—better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries and across the world—have never been more important than they are now.”
