Ross Wylie began his 2021 motor racing season in style when the Thornhill race ace scored two GT Cup podium finishes at Donington Park last weekend (10-11 Apr). The 29-year-old Scotsman creditably placed second and third in the GTO class despite being up against more powerful cars in the GTO class.
Wylie, sharing the SB Race Engineering entered Ferrari 488 with Paul Bailey, took over the Ferrari at half-distance in Saturday’s 50mins compulsory pit-stop race placed 26th overall. But a strong performance saw Ross take 10th place overall, third in class, at the chequered flag.
Bailey began Sunday’s 50mins race from the fourth row of the 33-car grid with Ross taking over the Ferrari with just 19mins remaining, the Scotsman resuming 10th overall. Wylie, who had progressed to seventh overall, second in class, at the chequered flag, set the car’s fastest lap in both races.
The Wylie/Bailey combination had been due to race a Brabham BT62 sportscar but an engine issue in testing two days earlier prevented its appearance. Ross’s next GT Cup races are at Brands Hatch over 1-2 May.
Ross Wylie (GB):
Age 29. Born & Lives Thornhill nr Dumfries, Scotland:
“It was great to get back racing again after the winter and an added bonus to come away with two podium finishes. The intention had been to race the Brabham but at the last minute, we had to literally dust off the Ferrari we raced last year which hadn’t turned a wheel for the past five months.“There was a massive entry which made it fantastic fun racing back through the traffic. Unfortunately we’re at a big disadvantage in terms of power compared to our GTO class rivals having previously run the Ferrari in the GTC category.”
