Cricket: Debuts but Defeats for Dumfries

The Dumfries CC first team. Your Move Dumfries, played away at Ferguslie on Saturday in a pre-league friendly sponsored by Jardine Funeral Directors.

Dumfries opted to bat first in Paisley with a side featuring two debuts by youth players Sean Thornely and Vaughn Staples to add to the one by Max Corbett-Byers the previous week. It was the experience of Robert McBride that was the mainstay of the batting effort top scoring with 39. However despite some promise on show it was insufficient to set a challenging total with the side reaching 120 all out with Glassford and Khan each taking three wickets.

That was compounded by a fifty opening partnership for Ferguslie. A spin combination with two wickets from Chris Brockwell and a debut wicket for Vaughn Staples put a dent in the reply but the effort by the bowlers was not enough to prevent a seven wicket defeat. McBride was the Jardine Funeral Directors Player of the Match for Dumfries.

Dumfries 120 all out (36.3 overs)
R McBride 39, C Glasford 3-30, Q Khan 3-30
Ferguslie 123 for 3 (31 overs)
C Brockwell 2 wickets, V Staples 1 wicket

The Dumfries Sunday XI also played away but this time in the diametrically opposite direction one hundred and forty miles away from Paisley at Appleby-Eden.

Again there were club debuts, this time for Matt Pickstock and John Woodhouse, but once again the side did not score enough runs being all out for 130. This time the experienced hand was Jerry Goodin who batted very well for his score of 53 not out. He was assisted by a doughty innings of 27 by James Cox.

Despite an early wicket by Hyder Hussain, the second wicket partnership was the largest of the game as Moore, with 53 not out, and Hodder with 37 took the game away from the visitors.  Dumfries responded with four more wickets, two to Trevor Newport, another to Hussain, and a run out, but it was a five wicket win for Appleby.  A top scorer for Dumfries, Jerry Goodin, was again the Jardine Funeral Directors Player of the Match.

This Saturday, after two cancelled rounds affected by travel guidelines, the West leagues start and Dumfries 1st XI play Poloc at home and Dumfries 2nd XI play at Poloc in the Reserve League.
