Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are undertaking essential bridge refurbishment works on the M74 at Junction 6.
Phase One will be overnight-only (20:00 – 06:00) with enabling works commencing Monday 5th July until Thursday 8th July 2021 and will comprise of hard shoulder and slip road resurfacing, and gulley replacement works.
The above works will involve closures of the A723 southbound to the M74 northbound slip road from Motherwell, and the A723 northbound to the M74 northbound slip road from Hamilton. The nearside northbound ‘slow’ lane will be closed, with traffic running on the offside northbound ‘fast’ lane during the works.
Road users intending to join the M74 from either slip road during the above works will be diverted to M74 Junction 8 via the southbound carriageway of the M74, where road users will make use of the Canderside Toll roundabout to return onto the northbound carriageway of the M74.
Phase Two will commence Saturday 11th July until Friday 23rd July 2021 on an overnight-only basis (20:00 – 06:00), and will involve construction of two 180m long crossovers within the centre reserve, in order to facilitate contraflow arrangements for the main construction scheme.
This will involve closure to the offside ‘fast’ lane on the southbound carriageway, and closure of the northbound offside and adjacent lane on the northbound carriageway.
During daytime (06:00 – 20:00), the southbound carriageway will be fully open. On the northbound carriageway, the offside lane will remain closed however full capacity will be maintained by utilising the hard shoulder as a live running lane. All slip roads will also remain open.
MAIN PROGRAMME OF CONSTRUCTION
The main construction scheme is scheduled to commence on Friday 30th July until Friday 8th October 2021.
This scheme will benefit around 65,000 vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the structure and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.
The work will be carried out using continuous 24/7 traffic management on the southbound carriageway including contraflows, use of the hard shoulder, and narrow running lanes. Signed diversion routes will be in operation throughout and we thank road users for their patience while this essential work is underway. The work will be split up into subphases to accommodate the following diversions:
Diversion One: Traffic intending to use the slip road which runs beneath the M74 and which connects the A723 northbound to the M74 southbound will be diverted instead at the slip road split to Junction 5 at Raith via the northbound M74. From here, traffic will join the southbound contraflow at Raith Interchange where the diversion will end.
Diversion Two: Traffic intending to use the southbound A723 to northbound M74 slip road will be diverted onto the southbound slip road at the slip road split. Traffic will continue on the southbound M74 and use M74 Junction 8 to return onto the northbound carriageway.
Diversion Three: Traffic intending to use the southbound A723 to southbound M74 slip road will be diverted onto the northbound slip road at the slip road split. Traffic will continue on the northbound M74 and use M74 Junction 5 Raith to return onto the M74 southbound carriageway.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be erected at strategic locations throughout the surrounding areas to provide road users the option of utilising alternative routes to their destinations.??During peak travel hours it is anticipated that the works area will experience increased levels of traffic. Road users are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, and consider travelling via an alternative route.?
Amey will also operate a 24-hour recovery service for the full duration of the works.
STGO haulage travelling from North to South shall be held at M74 Junction 5 Bothwell southbound services within a designated holding area until such time deemed appropriate to pass through the roadworks area.
