Dumfries Cricket Club faced a weekend interrupted with the weather intervening. Despite that two games were completed with Robert McBride producing a Croma Vigilant Player of the Match performance on Sunday and juniors Munro and Nairn Cubbon twinning up to share their match sponsor’s award on Saturday.
Nunholm, Dumfries seconds, played a friendly against Langloan on Saturday after the game was reduced to 25 overs a side and after a rain delay which meant it did not meet league fixture requirements.
Langloan batted first and John Woodhouse claimed the first dismissal with a good ball well caught by keeper Williams. Hyder Hussain comprehensively bowled opener Padana who was intent on adding to his score of 26. Thereafter Khan at number four aimed to hit out and rode his fortune as possible high catches were not taken in the field or fell short.
It was junior Munro Cubbon that broke a substantial partnership when Ronan Dunbar caught Allison on 31 at mid-on. Khan retired on 50 not out. The bowling attack bowled well, with Newport bowling another, but Langloan rattled on to a good score of 185 for 5. Nairn Cubbon followed his brother with a late lbw, each commendably taking a wicket on their 2nd XI debuts and a share of the Croma Vigilant Player of the Match award.
Skipper Jerry Goodin and opener Mat Williams shared a seventy run second wicket partnership for the home side. They took the reply to 94 for one, but under run rate pressure with only ten overs to go, Goodin miscued and was caught for 34. A misjudged run-out, on the second run, of Woodhouse set back hopes of some big overs and Nunholm did well to reach 145 for 5 but for a forty run defeat in a lively friendly. Mat Williams was top scorer with 50 retired.
Your Move Dumfries, Dumfries firsts, were playing away on Saturday and their Premier League match was abandoned after 27 overs due to rain with Stirling well placed on 147 for 1 thanks to a classy not out fifty from Brandon McMullen. Tommy McGrath claimed the only wicket of opener Booker well caught for 31 by Robert McBride at long-on. The side host Uddingston at home on Saturday.

On Sunday, Dumfries played Carlisle in the Sunday League. Dumfries posted a useful total of 179 for 9 off the 36 overs with skipper Matt Williams setting up a total with 51 retired and Robert McBride boosting that target including hitting a massive six to reach a rapid fifty, also retired. Gurupal Singh and James Hobman also contributed with scores in and around the twenties.
Clarkson of Carlisle dominated the early exchanges of the second innings by punching boundaries in an assured retiral fifty. The visitors kept up with the required run rate with a series of partnerships but wickets from Hobman, Singh, Hussain, and Muir stemmed their progress. However an important well-run fourth wicket effort between young batters Ferguson and Smith set up a close finish at 143 for 3 with six overs left. Dumfries persisted by taking a further two wickets to press for a possible slip-up but Carlisle batted well to reach the winning target in the penultimate over.
Robert McBride was the Croma Vigilant Dumfries Player of the Match for setting a target of defend with his score of fifty, plus a good catch, and Mat Williams achieved a ‘weekend’ century with two successive not out fifties.

Women’s Cricket: The final Women’s Premier League match on Sunday at George Watsons was cancelled due to opposition self-isolation availability issues. The local side was hoping for a win to try and nudge into third spot but the combined Dumfries CC/Galloway CC side finished the league season in a creditable fifth place.
Representative Cricket: Club junior Max Corbett-Byers played in the Scotland under-15s trial match on Sunday and his batting efforts, opening with a twenty plus score, aided his selection as a team reserve for their series of upcoming matches. Sean Thornely played for the Western Warriors under-17s in their two-day regional match at Ayr. Orla Montgomery took two wickets for the Scotland Women’s Performance Academy against the Northern Diamonds Academy at Alnwick and former junior Chris McBride played for Scotland A against Durham County 2nd XI in their two-day match.
