Mixed Weekend for Dumfries – Cricket News

Dumfries under-11s and Dumfries Women had a good weekend, but Dumfries firsts had a bad day at the office on Saturday at home against Uddingston in a defeat.

Former Dumfries player Niall Alexander was the man of the match as he opened the bowling for the visitors and his pace and swing caused a batting collapse. He was assisted by opening partner Abdul Sabri who took three wickets. A depleted batting line-up on the day needed the top order to stay there but Niall helped remove them rapidly and with the bowlers in the mood the remaining batsmen fared no better and the side was dismissed for a paltry score of thirty all out. Alexander finished with Jimmy Steele Bowling Award type figures of seven wickets for five runs. The batting response was a formality but there was a glimmer of a highlight with keeper Fergus Bainbridge taking an excellent first catch for the firsts as James Hobman managed to take the prized wicket of Awais.

However on Sunday Dumfries Under-11s managed a good win against an unbeaten Workington to reach their Cup semi-final and Cory Dawson caught the eye with a James Hallam Insurance Player of the Match performance.

Dumfries batted first against a challenging opening attack but Cory and Lachlan Osmond proved equal to the task. They set up the game by both reaching the retiral total of thirty. Jonty Clark-Maxwell struck two boundaries and Isaac Ishmael and Angus Middlemiss used their heads and ran well as Dumfries reached 103 for 2 off the 16 overs.

Opening bowler Macey Corbett-Byers took an important wicket very well caught by Cory and the latter bowled straight to hit the stumps four times. That left the home side in deep trouble. Oliver Clark-Maxwell then matched his brother with two wickets bowled. Gregor Martin and Angus Middlemiss contributed with their bowling and the latter took the final wicket, all out for 49. Sarah Cox kept wicket well as Dumfries got the better of the key match-ups in a cup-tie which could readily have gone the other way.

There was a win over Uddingston at the weekend but it was by Dumfries Women at their Wee Bash soft ball cricket tournament on Sunday. There they took on fellow Wee Bash regulars Uddingston, East Kilbride, SEMSA Sports Association and Clydesdale. They emerged with a full house of three tournament wins against the first three and enjoyed a post tournament friendly with Clydesdale and another victory. Bethan Cubbon was awarded the Tournament Trophy as Player of the Day and was well supported by contributions from all of her team.
