New Dumfries and Galloway ‘Gritter Tracker’ Spreading Good News

As part of the our Council’s work to improve information for the public on winter treatment of the local road network the Council has launched the Track My Gritter facility. This follows on from the recent schools competition to name the Council’s gritters and the mapping and treatment information is available on our website at www.dumgal.gov.uk/winter

Track My Gritter allows the public to follow our newly named 18 windg counciler service vehicles as they carry out winter treatment on our primary and secondary treatment routes across our region during periods of cold weather. The location of the vehicles is tracked on a map as they travel, providing their most up-to-date location. The map stores the last 12 hours of vehicle movements. Grit bins can also be viewed on the map making it easier to report empty, missing or vandalised bins.

Cllr Andy Ferguson, Chair of the Communities Committee, stated that:
“Track My Gritter will allow residents to see when and where gritters and snow ploughs have been working in their area but they should be mindful that does not give any indication or guarantee of the current condition of the road network. Road conditions can deteriorate quickly in severe weather, even when they have been gritted or ploughed and drivers are advised to always drive in accordance with the prevailing road and weather conditions.”
Cllr John Martin, Vice Chair of the Communities Committee, commented that:
“Improving our communications with the public was one of the objectives in the review of the Roads Service carried out over the last year and this use of vehicle tracking provides interesting and useful information for road users in planning journeys. Thanks to the schoolchildren who came up with some of the fantastic names for the gritters – my favourite being Jermaine DeSnow!”
