Dumfries To Host The First Scottish Festival Of ‘Slow Fashion’ Next Month

Scotland’s first festival of “slow fashion” will take place in Dumfries at the Loreburn Hall on Saturday 15th October.

The event is being organised by Dumfries Slow Fashion Movement CIC and Circle Vintage, “Rock for Re:Dress”, is a community festival celebrating all things slow fashion.

The event will feature music from local bands and DJs, including the Cherry Pinks, Kissing the Flint and the Fuzzkills; a youth theatre performance; and guest appearances by a whole host of talented performers.

The centrepiece is a full scale fashion runway show topped off by a high fashion finale. It’s a fashion and music extravaganza, and there’s an important environmental message, too.

The festival follows on from last October’s sell-out “Re:Dress” show that launched the environmental initiative, Dumfries Slow Fashion Movement. Director, Daniel McKinnon, told DGWGO: “Slow fashion is just the opposite of fast fashion. It’s all about keeping clothes in circulation for longer and cutting down on the colossal volume of new clothes being produced every year at great cost to the environment. Fast fashion and clothing waste are major contributors to the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, and there’s a huge human cost around fast fashion too. With this festival, we want to get people here in D&G interested in sustainable, “slow” fashion, and give everyone a show to remember!”

Rock for Re:Dress is also a real local community event with everyone taking part based right here in Dumfries & Galloway.

Looking to the future, the organisers plan to make this an annual event, bringing an autumn festival vibe to Dumfries with a slow fashion festival that reconnects with our proud textile producing history and shows that we can be at the forefront of change.

As Daniel says, “We’re looking forward to a greener future filled with creativity and a sense of pride in what we can achieve here in Dumfries and Galloway. This festival is, hopefully, just the start!.”

“Rock for Re:Dress” starts at 6pm on Saturday 15th October at the Loreburn Hall.
