Scotland’s Inaugural MaD ‘Festival of Creativity’ To Take Place In Dumfries & Galloway

Scotland’s inaugural MaD Festival (https://madfestivalscotland.com/), the ‘Making and Doing Festival of Creativity,’ (MaDFOC) will take place from the 12th to the 26th November 2022, in Dumfries and Galloway.

The festival, which is open to all and has a mission to inspire, educate and entertain, will celebrate the exceptional creative talent the area has to offer, through a diverse programme of events consisting of themed workshops, talks and demonstrations.

The South Machars Community Centre, in the royal burgh of Whithorn, will host the festival and participating local makers and doers from the region include: Tim Westley, a bladesmith from Bladnoch, who transforms washed up plastics and waste metal into unique chefs’ knives. Modern ‘rag and bone’ woman and sculptor, Silvy Weatherall. Morag MacPherson, who creates hand dyed kimonos and Laura Derby, wool textilist.

Kathleen Hart, Author and Community Arts Facilitator, MaDFOC, says: “The Making and Doing Festival of Creativity, will bring together the cream of Dumfries and Galloway’s creatives under one roof. The area is renowned for its rich vein of creativity. It is our intention to bring the practitioners of this region to this remote rural area and use the South Machars Community Centre as a hub for supporting small and micro businesses in a post Covid environment. People will have access to a variety of creative crafts and practices from metal forging to willow weaving. MaDFOC have ensured that all events are accessible with some events free of charge and others with just a nominal fee.”
Becki Castle, Business Development Manager, MaDFOC, adds: “We are both thrilled and proud that Creative Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council have seen the benefit of supporting an event such as this for both creators and the public alike. Their funding bears testament to the fact that they believe in this area and want to continue to promote the arts in Dumfries and Galloway.”

At the end of MaDFOC there will be an exhibition of work made by all participants in celebration of the event.
