Gretna residents are at their ‘wits end’ after a derelict coal yard has continued to be used as a regular fly tipping area.
For years, Gretna residents, the Tenants and Residents Association (Gretna TARA), Gretna and Rigg, Community Council and elected members have all tried to get the old coal yard on Loanwath Road tidied up.
Alison Smith, 27 Cadgill Road, Gretna was asked by many residents to start a petition, which she then passed onto Councillor Archie Dryburgh.
Donald Boyde, who lives directly opposite the site on Loanwath Road, informed Cllr Dryburgh that the residents are not only disgusted that the site continues to be a major fly tipping area but are also extremely concerned for the safety of children that are attracted to the area.
The site is a minefield of hazards, several used needles could be clearly seen by Councillor Dryburgh, as well as dangerous open water ponds that he presumes were once Wagon weigh stations or similar for the once Coal Yard. The badly damaged security gates were clearly in an appalling condition and are obviously a safety hazard.
