Women’s World Championship Ice Hockey Makes A Welcome Return to Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries Ice Bowl is the venue for the first World Championship Ice Hockey tournament to be held in Dumfries and Galloway since 2019.

The International Ice Hockey Federation’s Women’s Under 18s Division II Group A Championship takes place at the rink, featuring Great Britain and five other nations. The Great Britain team has one local representative, the talented Cassie McGregor, who plays for the Solway Sharks ladies.

Great Britain will compete from the 21-27 January against the Netherlands, Latvia, Australia, Mexico and Turkey for the medals and the opportunity to gain promotion to a higher classification.

Councillor Archie Dryburgh, Chair of the Council’s Communities Committee said;
“The Council has worked tirelessly, for many years, to bring major ice hockey and winter sports events to the Ice Bowl, and we are thrilled that after the COVID-19 pandemic we can resume hosting World Championship Ice Hockey. The sport is thriving in our area and this Women’s tournament can be the catalyst for more youth and ladies development in ice hockey.”
Clifton Wrottesley, the Chair of Ice Hockey UK, who are co-managing the World Championship with the Council on behalf of the International Ice Hockey Federation said;
“We’re very proud to host international ice hockey events in the UK, and Dumfries is one of our ‘go to’ venues. We are excited to be continuing our relationship with them.
Councillor John Campbell, the Vice-Chair of the Communities Committee said;
“It will be great to welcome so many international visitors from the five competing nations to Dumfries and Galloway this week, in advance of the World Championship tournament starting on Saturday. Ice hockey is a wonderful sport to watch and play, and we hope to convert more people to the sport through continuing to bring big tournaments to the Ice Bowl.”
