On 18th May 2023 one of the world’s foremost experts on Autism will be leading a
conference at The Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries. And both of Professor Tony
Attwood’s presentations will be streamed live to North West Castle in Stranraer.
Acknowledged as one of the world’s experts on therapy with Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD) clients Professor Tony Attwood’s one-day-conference in Dumfries
and Galloway is expected to be a highly anticipated event. Professor Attwood is
a clinical psychologist who has specialised in ASD since he qualified as a clinical
psychologist in England in 1975. He currently works in his own private practice,
and is also adjunct professor at Griffith University, Queensland. Professor Attwood
has been invited to be a keynote speaker at many Australasian and International
Conferences. He presents workshops and runs training courses for parents,
professionals, and individuals with Asperger’s syndrome all over the world and is a
prolific author of scientific papers and books on the subject.
On the day of the event the morning presentation will focus on the four stages in
the development of friendship and strategies to encourage the development of
friendship skills and social integration. This will include activities that can be
applied in the classroom, playground, and at home. The afternoon session will
focus on the issues faced by adults with Asperger’s syndrome with regard to
finding and keeping employment. The sessions have been chosen to benefit
parents, carers, and professionals who support people with Autism, and
individuals themselves.
This is Professor Attwood’s second visit to the region since 2017, where he spoke at
a very successful event, hosted by Dumfries and Galloway Autism Network.
Started in 2016, Better Lives Partnership (BLP) supports young people with Autism
and other additional needs in Dumfries and Galloway.
BLP has services located in Castle Douglas, Stranraer, and Dumfries. It aims to give
young autistic people a structured programme of person-centred accredited
training in their area of interest and expertise, work-related skills and to prepare
them for the next step towards employment, self-employment, education,
training or volunteering.
BLP is unique to Dumfries and Galloway in terms of its delivery style and target
group. There are no clear post-school options for the target group of young
people with ASD and related disabilities, especially for those living outside of
2 Dumfries.
Andy Margerison, Chair of Better Lives Partnership, says:
“This a great opportunity for the region, and for local parents, carers and
individuals with Autism to hear from one of the most highly acclaimed specialists
on Autism; live, and at an affordable price.Professor Attwood last visited the region in 2017, and it was an extremely popular
event, and we are excited to be welcoming him back. It is also incredibly
important to us that this time we to be able to increase accessibility to his
presentations across the region and allow for people in Stranraer to have access
to this prestigious event on their very own doorsteps.”Carolyn Kennedy, CEO for Better Lives Partnership, added:
“Better Lives Partnership is pleased to be hosting Professor Tony Attwood at the
Easterbrook Hall this May. It is an honour to be able to help support the
community by offering talks from such a reputable speaker, and raise the profile
of Autism Spectrum Disorder within the region.”
The event is being organized Better Lives Partnership, a local charity developing
services for people with Autism and their families. More information about the
