The All New DGWGO Weekly Rugby Round-Up

We would like to welcome you all to the first brand new weekly rugby round-up, brought to you in partner ship with Ross and John from Dumfries and Galloway Rugby Podcast.

Top of the table Newton Stewart hosted already-relegated Hamilton Bulls at Bladnoch over the weekend and managed a comfortable 52-12 win. Martin Wallace’s men scored 10 tries in total, including a hattrick from David Gaw and a first senior try for scrumhalf Wilson Sloan. Newton remains in first and ends their season of home fixtures unbeaten.

Elsewhere in National 2, title-chasing Glasgow Accies were narrow winners over Dumfries Saints 17-10 at Park Farm. The Saints’ rolling maul proved a threat throughout the game, earning them their first score, while standoff Jason Makhari grabbed the other. Gavin Blackburn’s side now sits in eighth but are just five points off the top five.

Sandy Currie’s Stewartry ran away 24-0 winners against bottom-of-the-table Carrick in West 1 at Greenlaw. Tries from Michael McCulloch, Ross Sanderson, John Picken (C) and a final play score from Fraser Forsyth helped the Blacks to all five points.

Mid-table in West 1, Annan welcomed Cambuslang to Violetbank on Saturday and came away 24-19 winners. The away side came out the blocks firing, scoring very early on before picking off an interception to lead the game 12-0. Frazer Hope, Dan Robson, Aaron Carmichael and Andrew Jancey (C) then stepped up, however, to turn the game around and claim the bonus point win on their home patch.

In West 2, Wigtownshire fell short to league-favourites Oban 14-10 at London Road. Oban’s strong kicking game and set piece proved too much for Gregor Henry’s side, who stay in fifth with 10 wins and five losses after 15 games. Jason McKie and Calum Lammie got the tries for Shire.

Moffat’s game away from home against Lanark & Clydesdale was called off, as was the Stewartry Sirens’ matchup with Hillhead Jordanhill.

The only game taking place this weekend will be Sunday’s fixture between Kelso and Wigtownshire Ladies, with all other sides taking a break for the final round of the 6 Nations tournament.
