Dumfries and Galloway College (DGC) Student Association has been shortlisted in two categories at the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland awards.
The association’s hard work and dedication to learners’ welfare has earned them nominations for College Student Association of the Year 2023 and the Campaigns Award 2023, with the winners being announced at an Awards Event in Edinburgh on Tuesday, March 28.
College Student Association of the Year recognises the achievements of associations in the past 12 months in shaping education and empowering individuals, while the Campaigns Award honours impactful initiatives that empower students’ associations, improve students’ lives or campaign on issues faced by members.
DGC Student Association’s ‘Here For You’ campaign centres around supporting students through the cost-of-living crisis. ‘Here For You’ is one DGC’s values and was used for the project to remind students that as a college and student body they are there to listen, care for and respect them and that there is always support available at college.
The project has taken on several key activities — including a student food bank, self-service facilities on offer at lunchtime, Christmas Gift Appeal and the ‘Here For You’ partnership event — which will also continue to impact students in future years.
Danielle Hughes, DGC Student Association President, said: “We are so pleased to have been shortlisted for these awards. This campaign — along with our other activities across this year — have helped increase the identity of our Student Association, allowing us to work with many more students as well as building relationships with college staff.”
College Principal Joanna Campbell said: “We are delighted the Student Association at Dumfries and Galloway College has been shortlisted in two categories at these national awards.
“The ‘Here For You’ campaign has helped people cope during the current cost-of-living crisis and it is a worthy project which has made a real impact with both students and staff.”
