Just weeks after UWS welcomed students to its multi-million pound new campus in Dumfries for the first time, University of the West of Scotland’s (UWS) Students’ Union has been named the best university students’ association in Scotland for the second year in a row.
The Union lifted the prestigious University Students’ Association of the Year prize at the NUS Scotland Awards 2023.
The highly sought-after award recognises the achievements of student associations over the last 12-months in shaping education and empowering individuals.
Professor James Miller, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “To win this award once is a remarkable achievement, but to win it twice in a row is truly outstanding.
“This is deserved recognition for our Students’ Union team, who play a pivotal role in ensuring that our students have the best possible experience during their time at UWS, while ensuring that they feel both supported and represented throughout.”
Voke Adams Adamatie, Vice-President of Student Development at UWS Students’ Union, said: “This award is a testament to the passion, hard work, dedication, and resilience of our entire student union staff team, the unwavering support of our student community and the support received from the university.
“It proves that together, we can dream, believe and achieve greatness; and stand tall even when we face challenges. I am excited that all our hard work has paid off and I am truly humbled. I would like to express my gratitude to all who have supported us along this journey, as we look forward to continuing our work with renewed passion and commitment.”
Sinead Daly, Chief Executive Officer at the Union added: “Winning this award for the second time in a row is a fantastic achievement for our Union and our members. We’re proud of the work we have done to help students with cost of living – with a large proportion of our students coming from the most deprived areas – this was a necessity.
“I am also very proud of the work that we have done reaching out to BAME students in our Union, which was led by our fantastic officer team and has saw a significant increase in our engagements with BAME students. Finally, I want to thank our Student Officer team, the Union’s staff and our members themselves for making this achievement possible.”
