Lockerbie Sawmill to Trial State-of-the-Art Electric Timber Lorry

James Jones & Sons Ltd, one of the largest sawmill groups in the UK, will be at the forefront of a three-year trial of state-of-the-art electric timber wagons, thanks to a £452,000 funding from Scottish Forestry.

As part of the first-of-its-kind project in the UK, James Jones & Sons Ltd will trial a 40-tonne articulated lorry from their sawmill at Nethercleugh,  Lockerbie to transport timber to their Hangingshaws national distribution centre.

The vehicle will be evaluated during the trial for its achievable mileage vs battery consumption, durability, viability, and total cost of ownership. The use of this electric truck is a significant step towards decarbonizing the timber transport industry and reaching net-zero emissions, an important goal for the forestry sector.
