Your Move Dumfries battled through at Nunholm for their opening match win against Greenock in Western Premiership One on Saturday. That was thanks to an innings of 66 not out by GM Thomson Player of the Match Alan Davidson.
Greenock batted first and after Dumfries kept things tight, and with two early wickets to Chris Brockwell, they owed their final total of 192 for 7 to a 120 run third wicket partnership between Polkinghorne and Fischer-Keogh. Brockwell returned to bowl Fischer-Keogh for 54 and Scott Beveridge immediately did the same to Polkinghorne for 64. Dumfries picked up three further wickets including a deserved bowled for James Hobman.
Dumfries also lost two early wickets, but Beveridge dug in, aided by Robert McBride, to take the score past fifty. However, McBride, for 23, was one of two lbw victims and the side needed a substantial partnership. Beveridge and Davidson provided that to approach 130 but Beveridge played on for 41. With the result in the balance, Brockwell helped take the score to 155 and then Callum Reynolds-Lewis, with 21 not out, supported Davidson to a good four wicket win.
It was a youthful adventure for Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, at Renfrew 2nds, Dean Park, in the new Western Championship League One, with eight of the team in their teens. Their more experienced opponents put on 231 all out with a century to Jagdale and 84 to Chopra. However, the bowlers stuck to their task with the last seven wickets falling for just seven runs. Trevor Newport spun his way to five wickets, Wahid Jabarkhil hit the stumps twice to be on a hat-trick and took three wickets, and Max Corbett-Byers took two wickets.
Then, like the firsts, the seconds worked hard for their runs. Batting at three James Little was top scorer. MacKenzie Sharples and Andrew Reed helped him get the side up towards the hundred. Munro Cubbon did the same and, when Little was caught for 49 for 135 for 6, Dean Park saw double as Nairn joined his twin with both thirteen year olds on second team debut.
A terrific batting effort from the pair achieved a near fifty partnership and the GM Thomson Dumfries Player of the Match shared between both. Munro was bowled for 32 and Nairn defiantly hit a six in the final over to finish 30 not out and the side not out on 194 for 9 to claim 5 bonus points.
Dumfries U13s had a promising start to their Cumbria League season at Appleby on Friday. Bill Middlemiss and Lachlan Osmond each hit 30 not out retired, Cory Dawson scored 22, Isaac Ishmael 13 and Macey Byers and Angus Middlemiss ran well in the final overs for a Dumfries total of 121. Appleby batted well in reply, with two retirals, but only hit the winning runs in the final over. The Dumfries highlight was the bowling and fielding from debutants Danny Allsop, Cameron Wilson, Reiff Colchester, and Yazdan Ovais.
