Dumfries Saints played their last game in National 2 over the weekend, following their relegation into National 3 for next season. They hosted Kirkcaldy at Park Farm and narrowly lost out 43-40 to a strong east-coast side. Gavin Blackburn says goodbye to the Saints, finishing in ninth with nine wins, 12 losses and one draw.
The Stewartry Sirens teamed up with some representatives from Wigtownshire and Ayr to form a combined women’s side to take on English touring side Ryton RFC from the North-East. The game was played in great spirit, with the forwards and backs even switching positions for the final 10 minutes. Dumfries and Galloway’s combined team came away 35-15 winners in the end, with Stewartry’s Holly Murdoch picking up player of the match. The women now plan to head south for a return fixture at Ryton and build a true rugby relationship for the ages.
On Sunday, clubs from the region also pulled together a Galloway U18 side to play a touring select team from Cumbria at Greenlaw. The home boys managed a 28-14 win, with players from right across D&G getting involved.
