One hundred studios located throughout Dumfries and Galloway will graciously open their doors to the public for the 21st edition of Spring Fling.
Taking place from May 27 to 29, this renowned open studios weekend in Scotland presents an exceptional opportunity to meet the remarkably talented and creative individuals who reside and work in one of the country’s most picturesque rural regions.
The selected studios encompass a diverse range of contemporary visual artists, including painters, illustrators, and original printmakers. Visitors will also have the chance to engage with skilled jewellery makers, potters, willow artists, glass makers, woodworkers, textile artists, and even two blacksmiths.
While many familiar artists and makers will be participating, the event organizers, Upland CIC, are committed to introducing fresh talents to Spring Fling. This year, 18 new artists and makers have been carefully chosen, including ceramicist Abbie La Rooy, who will exhibit at the Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, as well as visual artists Sally Jennings in Kirkpatrick Durham, Erinclare Scutton from Port Patrick, and Katy Quinn from Kirkcudbright.
Returning for the 2023 edition are notable participants such as jewellery maker Lisa Rothwell-Young from Langholm, potter Sam Sparrow from Thornhill, furniture-maker Ian Cameron Smith from Kirkcudbright, photographer Kim Ayres from Castle Douglas, and visual artists Lisa Hooper from Port William and Joanna Shennan from Dumfries.
Spring Fling plays a crucial role in supporting artists and makers, many of whom work in remote areas, while also contributing to the region’s economy. Over the years, the event has attracted approximately 169,000 visitors, who have made over 500,000 studio visits. Notably, more than £9.9 million has been spent within the studios during this period, generating over £16 million for the region’s economy.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore six color-coded routes, leading them to studios in various parts of the region. Some studios will feature special evening openings, as well as additional attractions like walking and bus tours, and demonstrations leading up to the event.
