Dumfries Cricket Club were defeated at a damp Greenock in Western Premiership One on Saturday. Scott Beveridge’s attacking innings moved him to the top of the Dumfries run scorers for this season with The Cumberland Player of the Match performance.
In a reduced thirty over match Dumfries set a total of 143 for 4 after being put in. Jordan Maritz was the other run scorer with 40 to reach 94 for 2 with eight overs left. Thereafter Beveridge helped add nearly fifty runs. He was out in the penultimate over for 59 trying to add his tenth boundary.
Dumfries then made inroads with James Hobman taking the first two wickets, followed by a bowled by Chris Brockwell to make it 32 for 3. That brought Greenock’s Indian professional Dalal in to make a decisive contribution. Tommy McGrath took an athletic caught and bowled but the runs equation favoured Greenock. Wickets were required and Wahid Jabarkhil duly took two wickets in two balls, 118 for 6. However, Dalal got his side to a four wicket win with his innings of 74 not out.
In Western Championship One, Nunholm lost their 45 overs game against Renfrew 2nds, Dean Park. After an opening cameo of 23 by Mark Abnett wickets fell quickly to have Nunholm at 47 for 4. Then Max Corbett-Byers and Ronan Dunbar put on a 78-run partnership until Max was out caught behind for 34. Dunbar added forty to his score including three sixes for 69 before the innings closed at 200 all out.
Dean Park made a rapid start but Nairn Cubbon removed Siddique for 25 as Nunholm struggled for a breakthrough. Vaughn Staples achieved that thanks to a one-handed Abnett catch but at 129 for 2. A partnership, and an innings of 71 not out by Chopra, then took the visitors through to victory. Ronan Dunbar was The Cumberland Dumfries Player of the Match.
On Sunday, Wetheral were the visitors with Dumfries batting first. Wahid Jabarkhil imposed himself opening hitting nine boundaries and 45 runs off just 28 balls. Things were more sedate with Scott Muir scoring 35 but wickets were being lost and it required a ninth wicket partnership by junior Bill Middlemiss and Harith Hassan to reach a reasonable total of 165 all out.
It proved not reasonable enough with both Wetherall openers reaching a retiral score of fifty. Jabarkhil did take a caught and bowled chance and Lachlan Osmond picked up one wicket and assisted in a Billy Morgan run out in the closing stages as Wetheral reached 167 for 3. Jabarkhil claimed the Learmont and Sim Builders Player of the Match award.
Scotland: At the World Cup Qualifiers Dumfries’s Chris McBride was part of a fifty opening partnership scoring 28 as Scotland scored 234 for 8 against Zimbabwe in a must win encounter. Scotland prevailed in the run chase restricting home side Zimbabwe to 203 all out. Scotland Men now have to beat the Netherlands to qualify for the 10-team World Cup finals in India in October.
