A family fun day and butter making workshops for all ages are some of the summer activities at Robert Burns’s Ellisland Museum and Farm this month.
The Summer Fun Day on Saturday 29 July will see the farm offer child friendly entertainment such as traditional games, face painting, nature trails and snacks, with music from the Spectrum youth group. Funds raised will support the museum and historic site.
In the run up to the fun day, Ellisland will host butter making workshops from the 24th to 28th of July. Adults and children can make their own butter at Ellisland, just like Robert Burns’ wife Jean Armour when she lived on the farm, the only home built by Burns himself.
The workshops are bookable for a reasonable fee and are for both adults and children. Entrance to the Fun Day is free with individual activities offered for a small charge.
The Fun Day is a repeat of a successful event held last summer and is made possible through funding from The Holywood Trust.
Spectrum will perform from 1.30pm at the Fun Day. They are a group of young musicians from across the region who are organised by the music teacher Barbara Lewis.
Families are invited to bring their own picnics to enjoy on Ellisland, which inspired Burns songs and poems including Ye Banks and Braes and Auld Lang Syne. There will also be refreshments and home baking available to purchase on the day.
Robert Burns Ellisland Trust, the charity which safeguards the site, has appealed for prizes or items to sell such as plants.
Caitlin MaCleod is the Museum Development and Education lead and has been helping plan the event, she said ‘We are thrilled to be bringing back the Summer Fun Day after last year’s success. It is the perfect opportunity for people in the local community to enjoy the beautiful grounds of Ellisland and learn about the importance of the site.’
‘The event this year will feature a nature theme and the activities will highlight the biodiversity and beautiful landscapes we have on our doorstep! Visitors can expect a family friendly atmosphere and entertainment for people of all ages.’
