Dumfries Cricket Club lost their Western Premiership match at Stenhousemuir on Saturday with Danny Armstrong competing with an all-round performance for the Solway Print Player of the Match award.
Dumfries had a chastening start with the loss of three wickets for one run. After that it immediately became a case of trying to salvage the innings. A series of batsmen did get scores, principally Alan Davidson with 33 aided by Max Corbett-Byers got the score up to fifty but it still required the last four wickets to add a further hundred to the total. Beveridge battled to be last out with 28 and Danny Armstrong hit five boundaries in his 26. The Chris’s, Brockwell and McCutcheon, provided support to get to 152 all out but with twelve overs still remaining.
Stenhousemuir took a measured approach and an opening stand of over eighty took a large chunk out of their target. Tommy McGrath took that first wicket for the first of his two and three wickets fell for just five runs once past a hundred with Armstrong claiming two. However, in a similar number of overs, Stenhousemuir got to 153 for the loss of four wickets for the win.
Callum Reynolds-Lewis provided a Solway Print Player of the Match all round effort at Nunholm in the match against Kelburne 2nds, Whitehaugh. Whitehaugh batted first and a score of 93 by opener MacLean helped take the visitors to an imposing 270 all out. The Nunholm bowlers did well to pull the score back to 179 for 7 at one stage but 70 not out in the later stages by Hussain put paid to a lower total. Trevor Newport and James Cox each took three wickets with two for Reynolds-Lewis.
A new opening combination of Reynolds-Lewis and Vaughn Staples gave the side a great start by reaching 84 for no loss but Callum fell just three runs short of fifty due to a stunning one-handed diving catch at long-on. Staples scored 23. Wahid Jabarkhil and Ronan Dunbar added rapid scores of 33 and 20 respectively but both fell to catches at deep midwicket. With rain threatening Nunholm had been keeping up with a winning D/L running total but the loss of wickets scuppered that and the tail went cheaply for 170 all out just as the rain came to finish any possible further play.
It was a blizzard of boundaries in the Eden Valley Sunday League fixture at Stainton with 17 sixes and 51 fours hit between both sides. Dumfries powered their way to 251 for 3 in the 36 overs. Opener Wahid Jabarkhil who hit 68, with 4 sixes, was the Brockwell Horticultural Player of the Match. Adam Malik and Gurupal Singh both retired with scores of 52 and 53. Mackenzie Sharples and Andy Smith, on debut, added 16 and 29 respectively and Naseri hit his debut first ball for six.
If it was hard for Stainton to restrict boundaries on a small ground then Dumfries found the same problem. The openers put on a hundred and then youngster Jude Dobinson hit 67 including twelve boundaries. Mark Abnett took two wickets and Maritz, Malik and Jabarkhil one each but the post-mortem was on the near top scorer of extras as Stainton got home with only a few batters left.
Dumfries firsts next play Stirling at Nunholm on Saturday.
