DGWGO Weekly Rugby Round-up 2/11/23

In this weeks DGWGO rugby round-up brought to you in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Rugby podcast, get all the latest news from Newton Stewart RFC, Dumfries Saints, Stewartry RFC, Wigtownshire RFC, Annan RFC, Moffat RFC and Dumfries Saints Ladies squad. 

Newton Stewart claimed a first-ever win over Edinburgh side Stew Mel with a strong 38-25
victory at home. The result sees them take fifth spot in the league, just four points off the top 3.

Dumfries Saints were unfortunately well beaten by a travelling Orkney side 33-17. Paddy
Cooper’s men sit third bottom of National 3 but are level on points with West of Scotland in
seventh.

Sandy Currie’s Stewartry just missed out on a home victory against Whitecriags after the game was stolen from them in the final minute 36-32. Angus Lindsay, Sam Tait and Ross Sanderson provided the tries that gave the Blacks a consolidating two bonus points.

Both Annan and Wigtownshire were beaten in their West One games, 50-10 against Oban and 40-18 against Lenzie respectively. Annan now slip to the bottom of the table, while Shire sit fourth.

Moffat got back to winning ways at Holm Park with a solid 38-26 win over Shawlands. Max
Douglas provided a number of points for his side to ensure the Rams keep the pressure on at the top of the West 3 league table.

The Stewartry Sirens faced a tough Corstophine side at Greenlaw and were unable to come
away with a victory as they were beaten 61-3 on home soil. Lisa Ritchie the one to score the only points for the Premiership outfit.

Annan Warriors were resilient in attack as they put 21 points past Biggar but were slightly
weaker in attack as they conceded 58 and ultimately came away with the loss.
Wigtownshire Ladies made it four wins in a row with another great result at home, beating
Greenock 29-17. Carla Campbell (x2), Niamh Wilson, Ellen Watt and Lauren McCulloch scored the tries.

The Dumfries Ladies played three games at Greenock, drawing two against Glasgow Uni and Greenock Blue and just falling short against Paisley 10-5. Captain Annabelle Hiddleston getting the Saints’ player of the tournament.
