Queens Ladies Back To Winning Form After Festive Break

Queen of the South Ladies returned from their Christmas break with a home league fixture against St Mirren Ladies on Sunday in front of a crowd of around 50 spectators, including a decent contingent of away supporters.

After an initial burst of pressure from St Mirren, queens took the lead in the 8th minute when striker Lois Geddes’s powerful run down the right ended with her squaring the ball across goal for Holly Ovens to tap in from close range.  Four minutes later Geddes again burst through on the right and again her well weighted cross set up Ovens who collected the ball, swivelled and shot into the corner of the net.  St Mirren struggled to get back into the game but as usual Queens defence was solid.  After 25 minutes Queens added to their lead when Kirsty Mcdonald got her head to a corner from the right and the ball dropped over the keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

The second half continued with Queens on top, but it was another 25 minutes before queens added their fourth goal through Georgia Wilson.  St Mirren pulled a goal back in the 74th minute, but Abbie Gray swiftly restored Queens’ 4 goal margin when she chased a superb through ball from Charlotte Smith down the right wing, leaving the tiring Paisley team’s defence in her slipstream before releasing a terrific shot from a wide position which evaded the keeper and ended up in the far corner of the net.

Full time score Queens 5  St Mirren 1, and Queens now sit in third place in the league.

This Sunday, Queens travel to Airdrie for a league fixture.
