On Friday 7th June Holstein Scotland South held their annual Open Day and Stock Judging at Baltier Farm, Wigtownshire by kind permission of the Forsyth family with around 300 people in attendance.
As well as hosting the Stock Judging and Open Day the Forsyth family are celebrating 60 years of the family farming at Baltier.
The focal point of the day was the stock judging which saw almost 200 people take part in the stock judging with four strong classes of six cows forward for deliberation and Glyn Lucas from Harrison & Hetherington the master judge.
The Forsyth’s have invested in Holstein genetics over the years and now have numerous well-known families in the herd including Jodie, Rae, Pledge, Ashlyn, Zandra, Lila Z which were all well represented in the stock judging.
The Forsyth’s and Holstein Scotland South are greatly indebted to the sponsors who kindly supported the event.
The 850-head herd are milked three times a day through a 50 point rotary, and average 36kg. The family farm 1000 acres with 350 in maize and 500 grass silage done in house, and the remaining 150 acres grazing ground.
Another enterprise on the farm is an Anaerobic Digester which is capable of producing 1500kW.
It takes a lot of work to put on such an event and we’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved and those who travelled to Wigtownshire to enjoy a great show of cows and walk around the busy working farm.
