One of Dumfries’ most ancient and prominent buildings, St Michaels and South Church is going all out to welcome visitors and the community over two days to experience a number of special events including music, singing, poetry, drama and guided tours as part of Scotland’s Doors Open Day project.
Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September are the dates when the public can come along and marvel at the Church’s 280 years old interior; stunning stained-glass windows, impressive pulpit, superb Henry Willis organ, visit Robert Burn’s mausoleum and over two days enjoy a varied programme of music, singing, poetry and art while also having time for personal reflection.
Renowned organist Simon Hyslop will play a varied selection of favourites on the church organ; Jane Brown and Rose Byers will deliver their very own presentation relating to Jean Armour and Rabbie Burns, members of The Galloway Consort will perform 15 th – 16 th Century instrumentals, the church’s Junior Choir led by Roy and Fiona Watson and supported by Diva Voice will sing a beautiful selection of religious, folk and classical songs, amazing art works produced by participants in the Access Art project will adorn the church railings and, when fresh air is required, visitors can have a guided tour of the ancient and fascinating graveyard.
The Sunday Morning Service at 11.00am on Sunday 8 th will also be a special civic service led by The Reverend Bill Hogg then the church will mark the 30 th anniversary of the Twinning of Dumfries with Gifhorn in Germany. Local dignitaries, Councillors and a small delegation from Gifhorn will be in attendance. The activities of the second day of the Open Doors programme will follow on thereafter.
Church Development Officer at St. Michael’s and South, Fiona Lee said; “The church is ‘open’ all year but Doors Open Day, or two days for us on this occasion, is a wonderful opportunity to share what we believe is a most beautiful and special place.
