Local Rotary Clubs Go a FAIRWAY by Raising £23,542 for Charity

Rotary Clubs of Dumfries Devorgilla and Dalbeattie held their first Am/Am Charity Golf Tournament at Southerness Championship links course on 16 August 2024 raising an astonishing £23,542. The joint event was held with the kind generosity of Southerness Golf Club who donated the day of golfing for charity with all proceeds from the day split equally between Macmillan Cancer Support and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The event was well supported with generous Event and Hole sponsorship received from many businesses locally and further afield. Support from Local Golfers and Golfers from neighbouring Counties provided an impressive entry of 45 teams of four, enjoying a full day of golfing and some challenging conditions from a strong Solway Coast wind but fortunately with some clear sky and summer sunshine. The charity day included, ‘Beat the Pro’ competition with competitors taking on PGA Professional James Erskine, as well as Nearest the Pin competition and also a Grand Raffle. A range of excellent prizes totalling a value of over £6000 was able to be shared with the 10 best teams with the team of Margaret Carruthers, Agnes Sommerville, Tommy Hutchison and Scott Hutchison coming out on top as overall winners.

The final total for money raised was able to be split equally with, £11,771 to both Macmillan Cancer Support and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, the chosen Charites. Bruce Port, ‘Macmillan Cancer Support’ relationship manager attended the event. Bruce said:

“This is a considerable sum of money that has been raised. It is very much appreciated by Macmillan Cancer Support and a big thank you to all that have been involved with the charity day. To put into perspective the money raised will cover one Macmillan nurse for 2 months or provide 250 financial grants to people requiring cancer support or reach out to over 28,000 people on the Macmillan Cancer Support online community fund”.

Dunfries Devorgilla Rotary President and Chair of the Am/Am Committee Bob Carruthers presented the prizes and said:

“I would like to thank everyone involved in making the charity day such a success in, organising, supporting, donating and of course all our competitors for entering teams, without whom the event would not take place. Special mention should be made to Southerness Golf Club for their kind generosity in donating the day, Andrew Kerr Golf Operations Manager at Southerness, for his organisation throughout the day, James Erskine PGA Pro for Hosting and Sponsoring, ’Beat the Pro’ during the event, as well as the staff of Southerness including greenkeepers for their presentation of the Course and the catering staff for a tremendous Buffet all of which helped create such a memorable day. This has been an excellent example of Rotary working together and our Clubs are delighted to raise this fantastic sum for the benefit of Macmillan Cancer Support and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation”.
