The cricket league season concluded for both Saturday Dumfries teams at the weekend and both finished as league winners for the first time in collective memory.
In Western Championship 2, the favourites for the title, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, became Champions albeit after a match cancellation against bottom side Renfrew, but earned that as a result of a league campaign of 13 wins and 2 defeats to just edge out title challengers Hillhead. Skipper Scott Beveridge led the way as the side’s top run scorer and led a team with a mix of experience and youth. Club juniors Nairn and Munro Cubbon, Billy Morgan and Cory Dawson successfully made the step up into senior league cricket with contributions of wickets and runs. The older heads of Beveridge, Andrew Reed and James Cox provided the bulk of the runs and Wahid Jabarkhil was mercurial with bat, and in the field, hitting the season’s top score of 94.
In Western Premiership 2, Dumfries, already the title winners, were defeated in their final match at Langside. That was largely due to a top score of 85 by opposition opener Anwar Hafeez for Langside to reach 145 on a low scoring pitch. The match marked an impressive first team debut from the Dumfries S&R Roofing Player of the Match, youngster Munro Cubbon, who took 4 wickets for 20 and his twin Nairn also chipped in with 2 wickets. Callum Reynolds-Lewis was the season’s top wicket taker spinning his way to a further two wickets. After opener Chris Bellwood consolidated his position as the league’s top scorer with 33, Dumfries then slipped to 90 all out with Hafeez again a factor in taking four wickets. Like the 2nd team, Your Move Dumfries also ended with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses to be promoted back to the top league in the West region, Western Premiership 1.
The playing season at Nunholm concluded with a successful Masters Cricket tournament on Sunday. That involved three teams from Dumfries and Galloway, Mearns and Stenhousemuir, all with a mix of experience and experience. Undefeated in their two matches, Mearns claimed the tournament trophy in an over-age-group approach the club will continue at Nunholm as one part of the club’s aim to encourage cricket participation for all.
