Creativity Celebrates The Underwater Mysteries Of The Solway

From Oysters to real life sea creatures revealed by a new film “Solway Unseen”

  • Solway Coast and Marine Project are working with Creative Stranraer to offer some oyster and sea creature themes creative Workshops
  • Creative Workshops for all the family in the October Holidays which connect people to their marine environment.
  • As part of the workshop you can see the new film, “Solway Unseen” shot by Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club and edited by eco filmmaker, John Wallace.

SCAMP (Solway Coast and Marine Project) is collaborating with Creative Stranraer to offer three creative workshops on the theme of Stranraer’s and the Rhins coastal and marine environment.

The workshops are taking place next week, the first week of the School holidays and offer some great creative/learning experiences for all the family.

All the workshops will be based at the Creative Hub in Stranraer and a great opportunity to learn more art making skills and see the film “Solway Unseen” which has been created with incredible photography and film footage shot by the Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club and edited by eco filmmaker John Wallce. Janet Jones of Creative Stranraer explains what to expect;

“Have you ever wondered what creatures might live in the waters of Loch Ryan and the Solway Coast? Creative Stranraer, along with SCAMP, are running creative sessions inspired by sea creatures and Stranraer’s oysters. From drawing to sewing, the workshops are designed to be fun, creative and an opportunity to learn more about the marine environment. They are perfect for young people, adults and all the family to enjoy. Just bring your sense of curiosity and creative adventure!”. For children under 8 years old, we ask parents to come along and join in.”

Wednesday 16th October – “Oyster Odyssey”- Create Your Own Grotto with Oysters, Meeting at the Creative Hub, 23 King Street, Stranraer DG9 7JU,  1pm – 3.00pm

Meeting at the Creative Hub at Stranraer, Nic Coombey will take you on a walk to find out more about Oysters and why they are so important to Stranraer and the outer Solway. Grottos have been around for a long time often magical places in the form of small caves hidden away in the rocks or coves of coastlines. Sometimes these caves were carved into creating decorative mythology inspired features. They can also be man made and became fashionable in gardens in the 16th and 17th century.

Thursday 17th October – Sea Creature Drawing Workshop (Creative Hub, 23 King Street, Stranraer DG9 7JU, 1pm – 3.00pm)

Meeting at Stranraer’s Creative Hub join environmental artist, Jan Hogarth to take a journey into the deep where you will be invited to a showing of eco filmmaker, John Wallace’s film from edited underwater footage shot by Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club and SCAMP research trips.

After the film, Jan will show you how to use stills and film footage to create some fabulous drawings that celebrate and reimagine those real life sea creatures. Saturday 19th October – Into the Deep” Sea Creature Sewing Workshop (Creative Hub, 23 King Street, Stranraer DG9 7JU, 1pm – 3.00pm)

Join us for a fascinating journey “Into the Deep” to explore what might be under the water and live deep in the Solway. We will be showing a film by eco film of underwater edited footage by Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club which gives us a glimpse of what might be down there. Then we invite you to imagine and create your very own sea creature from recycled materials.
