Annan man Tony Nisbet , co founder of Newstart Recycle, and his wife Angela were invited to Holyrood in Edinburgh to help celebrate the Scottish Parliament’s 25th anniversary.
South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth nominated Tony as a Local Hero, part of a parliament scheme to recognise the brilliant work of people from across Scotland who make a positive difference to the lives of others.
Tony, alongside Frank McGowan, founded Newstart Recycle in Annan, a community based not-for-profit organisation selling pre-loved and upcycled furniture and household goods. Items are sold to the public or given to people who need it most.
Earlier this year all 129 MSPs were invited to nominate a constituent who makes a positive difference to the lives of others – often with little recognition – as their “local hero”.
Those nominated attended a special ceremonial event to mark the 25th anniversary of The Scottish Parliament on 28 September. Their Majesties The King and Queen were special guests at the event.
Colin Smyth said: “As the Scottish Parliament marks its 25th anniversary, it’s right that the people of Scotland are placed at the heart of our events.
“Together with my fellow MSPs, we want to celebrate the achievements of our Local Heroes from across every constituency and region in Scotland.
“Tony’s work is truly inspirational and I was very proud to nominate him to come along to this historic event and welcome him and his wife to Parliament.
“Every day it seems Tony gets up and the first thing he thinks about is what more he can do to support the local community.
“Both Tony and Frank work tirelessly at Newstart Recycle and they help so many people.”
